Atheism, faith, God and science, Love

I believe in God.

My husband is Atheist.

And we make it work – beautifully. Believe it or not, we have never had an argument on the existence of the Divine, although we talk about faith in something and faith in nothing all the time. We discovered the fundamentals of what we believe individually meet somewhere in between. He believes in what he can see and touch, and what science proves with fact. I believe in the existence of an eternal soul, the equality of male and female aspects of the Divine and the power of prayer as taught by Jesus.

Together we believe in the responsibility of humans to respect and care for each other. We believe that we all have a responsiblity to care for our environment and we believe in the responsibility of caring for our children.

We respect each other more for our differences and being true to our beliefs. Neither of us want the other to feel obligated to give up who we are for the sake of the other. We are united by our love for each other and for the love of our daughter. We see our relationship as a way of showing our child through example and  action that two people can be very different and still love and respect each other. It is an opportunity to prove there is always a commonality among people.

I wonder if God is science? If you look at Evolution, the amazing ways that life on Earth has adapted and how powerful all that is, as a believer I see God as the power behind it all. I believe in the awesome creativity of the Divine and I have no doubt that Power is behind it all. My Atheist husband had a very good point in our last discussion: We don’t know. Maybe we will only know after we die, but God or no God, shouldn’t we all live to the fullest of our potential?

It’s Not About The Money

When money is tight, it’s hard to say that “it’s not about the money”, especially when the bills need to be paid and there are extra but necessary things that must be taken care of.  But when you think about it, it really isn’t the currency we need.

It is actually about simply meeting your needs. In the last months, I’ve come to realize what it is like to really live in the simple abundance that God provides. It has taken a lot of Faith and a mountain of Surrender. And it has taken being open to God’s wonderful creativity as well as using the creativity that God has given me.  I have seen my needs being met- every single one of them- without having to come up with a single extra dime to do it.

It has taken using the brain that God gave me. Something as simple as window blinds and  ceiling fans, needed to beat the summer heat and reduce our electricity bill, have been provided. For free. The creative part is realizing that these things didn’t need to be purchased, and a watchful eye on a “free item” recycling board did the trick. And I think God took it a step further in his Divine Creativity by helping me to keep unwanted or unneeded items out of landfills. I am not the only winner in this process!

I think we need to be constantly open to God’s wonderful humor and creativity. Some of the simplest things that God provides in our lives may seem mundane and unimpactful, but if we look closer at the snowball effect that these tiny gifts create, we see that what God provides in the big picture is huge and amazing.

Be open to the Divine Creative Hand in your lives, my friends. Have the eyes to see what God is giving you and the ears to hear His voice!

Magdalene Seal, Mary Magdalene

Today, I was reminded of the strength and serenity of Mary when I looked at the Magdalen Seal necklace I wear almost daily. I’ve worn it so much in fact, that I had to replace the cord it came on.

Chartres, Labyrinth, St. Pauls Houston

On Tuesday before Christmas, I was able to walk a labyrinth for the first time. It was a simple, painted on canvas labyrinth, but it was the lovely Chartres labyrinth, nonetheless. I also had my mother-in-spirit and my daughter with me. I couldn’t help but think of the Maiden/Mother/Crone that was represented while we were there.

In the Labyrinth Center

The labyrinth has been an immensely important symbol for me in the last year, and literally and figuratively became the path through which  my new faith found me. I say that faith is finding me because I was not looking for it, and now it is constantly revealing itself to me in the most amazing and beautiful ways.

It is a dream of mine that one day I will walk the stone labyrinth of Chartres Cathedral itself. I even hope to walk the labyrinth at Grace Cathedral in San Francisco sometime in the next year or two. But for now, I can at least walk it here at home, once a month. I have learned that God blesses us with exactly what we need, precisely when we need it, no less.
